Hollywood has visited Mississippi on numerous occasions to film. Huge crowds turned out to serve as extras for The Crisis (1917), the first feature length film shot in Mississippi. The second part of John Ford's The Horse Soldiers (1959) was shot in Mississippi, as were The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag (1992), Heart of Dixie (1989), and Mississippi Burning (1988). Cookie's Fortune was filmed in 1999 in Holly Springs. Segments of Home from the Hill (1960) and Intruder in the Dust (1949) were shot on location here in Oxford.
