On October 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi. While his journey began long before that day, this project focuses on the hope that was sparked all over the world, by such a large event that took place in such a small town.

Project includes a selection of letters and telegrams that Mr. Meredith received from across the United States and around the world:

  • Alaska (Koyuk), Arkansas (Fort Smith), Hawaii (Honolulu), Michigan (Detroit, Livonia), Pennsylvania (Ardmore), Tennessee (Nashville), Texas (Marshall), Washington, D. C., Puerto Rico,
  • Austria, Australia, Canada, England, France, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Uruguay, West Germany
