In 1964 civil rights workers Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman were murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The film Mississippi Burning (1988) presents the story on film. Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) retells the story of the 1963 murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers and the decades-long struggle to bring his killer to justice.
