Abstract

Background. Telepractice involves the use of telecommunication and internet technology to connect a client and speech-language pathologist or other healthcare providers remotely. While records have been found that consider telepractice equivalent to in-person therapy, limited evidence has been documented that tests the feasibility. Testing the feasibility of telepractice aims to answer the question: “Can it work?” This study focused on the analysis of previous studies that evaluate the feasibility of telepractice in aphasia intervention. Through these studies, we examined four factors of feasibility: satisfaction, acceptability, technical issues and skills, and competence, to evaluate the feasibility of telepractice in aphasia intervention.

Methods. We formed keywords and used the databases PubMed and PsycINFO to find and screen relevant articles based upon certain inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fifty-four articles were initially searched and screened, and 14 articles were left to be included in the study.

Results. Feasibility factors of satisfaction, acceptability, technical issues and skills, and competence were examined in all of the included studies of the review. Results were positive for satisfaction and competence, positive and mixed (positive and negative) outcomes for acceptability, and only mixed outcomes for technical issues and skills.

Conclusion. This study assesses the feasibility of telepractice in aphasia intervention and shows results of positive and mixed outcomes. Future research should consider having a larger sample size, providing more comprehensive feasibility studies, and investigating other populations such as other neurogenic communication disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, or swallowing disorders.
