Southern Anthropologist
Abstract
Over a decade after Hsu's recognition of the urgency of national characte r studies, the pressing need is still there, especially in light of the demand for the anthropological application to the author's career. In this essay, the significance of the approach is exemplified, and impediments to its furtherance are revealed. Honggang Yang, a Chinese anthropologist who received his Ph.D. from University of South Florida in 1991, is presently a Research Associate of Conflict Resolution Programs at the Carter Center of Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia.
