Thomas G. Abernethy Collection

The fourth congressional district of Mississippi elected Democrat Thomas G. Abernethy to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1942. In 1952, state reapportionment resulted in the loss of a congressional seat, and Abernethy won the first congressional district in a race against the incumbent. When he retired in 1973, Abernethy held the third highest seniority on the House Agriculture Committee and chaired its Cotton Subcommittee.

The material provided here represents only a fraction of a much larger physical collection whose finding aid is available online. More digital material from the collection may become available in the future.

The digital collection contains all photographs in the Abernethy Collection as well as one recording. The photographs are available for viewing on the internet; however, researchers may only access the recording via onsite computers in the University of Mississippi Libraries.

The digitization and preservation of recordings in this collection are the result of a project supported in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed on this website do not necessarily represent those of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
