Description
In 1973, Ben Williams became the first player at the University of Mississippi to earn All-SEC honors. Two years later, he earned All-American honors, became the first African American elected by the student body as Colonel Rebel, and was chosen as team captain for the football team. In 1976, he was selected in the National Football League draft making him the first black athlete from the University of Mississippi to play in the NFL. Graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration, Williams went on to play for the Buffalo Bills for ten years. In 1991, the University's African American alumni established the Minority Alumni Scholarship, and the following year, Williams endowed the scholarship and it was renamed the Ben Williams Minority Scholarship. In 1997, Williams became the first African American from the University of Mississippi inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
