Mississippi native Dr. Blair Batson was Head of Pediatrics at the University of Mississippi's University Medical Center in 1965 when he invited an African American medical resident, Dr. Aaron Shirley, to join UMC's Department of Pediatrics, effectively integrating the Medical Center three years after the integration of the Oxford Campus. In 1997, the state's only dedicated children's hospital was named for him: the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children. The facility, now known as Children's of Mississippi, features a Blair E. Batson Tower.
