Providence Nov 10 1871 Dear Fred At the instance of your Ma whose affectionate care is ever deeply concerned for the interest of her [idolesed] son. I have copied the lines below from [Bulwer's] [Caxtories] and will commend them to your attentive perusal as [illegible word] fraught with valuable suggestions he a college student. They are as follows For a young man to go up to Cambridge (I say nothing of Oxford, knowing nothing thereof) merely as routine work, to lounge through three years to a degree among the [vi polloi]- for such an one, Oxford street herself where the immortal Opium Eater hath so [illegible words] is not a more care less and stony hearted mother. But for him who [illegible word] read, who will work, who will seize the rare advantages proffered who will select his friends judiciously- yea out of that vast [furnace] of [illegible word] idea in its lusty vigor, choose the good and reflect the bad- there is plenty to make those three years such with [illegible word] [imperenbale]- three years nobly spent, even though through one must pass on the [illegible word] Bridge to get into the Temple of Honor. your Friend [Cheche] Pelcher
