Abstract

This photo series is centered around Charleston, a small town in North Mississippi, which fashions itself as the “Gateway to the Delta”. Despite being born and raised in North Mississippi, I have never experienced Charleston until this project. This sequence highlights the contrast between being one of the most poverty-stricken counties in Mississippi and the community’s desire for improvement.

Jessica Cobb is a native of North Mississippi. I am a new mom and first-generation college student, and I am currently a senior at the University of Mississippi pursuing a degree in Legal Studies with a minor in Southern Studies. Taking the course “Photographing Place in the American South” and seeing the towns that I have grown up around through a photo lens has given me a new perspective of my community and the surrounding communities.
