Abstract

This photo project of Sardis, Mississippi lends itself as a way to challenge the viewer in looking at the parts of Mississippi that are rough and uncovered. In several ways, this photo series documents small-town living in a community with many hidden treasures, such as graffiti and signage on buildings and streets, drawings in the wet concrete, and unique buildings that are hidden from plain view.

Christina Huff is an MFA student in Documentary Expression in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi. Christina received an undergraduate dual degree in Art and Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi in 2017, and received her Masters degree in Southern Studies in 2021. Her thesis work revolves around queer communities in the conservative South with a primary focus on drag queens and drag performance.
