Scope and Content Note:
The collection largely preserves the integrity of the original filing system. Thus, folder numbers retain those assigned by the law firm. Although the file numbers run sequentially for the most part, there are gaps of apparently missing files, a few files are without numbers, and the last few boxes contain widely disparate numbers out of sequence. Most of the files are named after a specific court case. However, general files labeled “Different Cases” appear sporadically and usually contain a date range. In order to increase the utility of the collection to historians, the archive has added notations for each case file documenting the time span of the documents within as well as a brief, basic description of the subject matter. Case files of particular note within the collection include several folders related to the estate of noted classical archeologist David M. Robinson (1880-1958) and the disputed estate of wealthy Kate Skipwith whose family had donated the funds to build the Mary Buie Museum in Oxford. The archive has separated the following types of records and consolidated them at the end of the collection: files on the American Bar Association (1942-1962), Mississippi State Bar (1943-1962), the Draft Board (1952-1957), Court Calendar (1959-1963), Stone’s personal finances as well as those of the law practice, correspondence with J.P. Coleman (1955-1961), Republic Party (1959-1968), correspondence with James A. Farley, and personal papers of Stone’s wife (Emily Whitehurst Stone) and Stone himself.
