Description
A Democrat from Mississippi, John E. Rankin served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1921 to 1953. An advocate for rural electrification, he co-authored the bill creating the Tennessee Valley Authority. He chaired the World War Veterans’ Legislation Committee from 1931 to 1946 and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee from 1949 to 1952. He also served briefly on the House of Un-American Activities Committee.
