Description
Typed Description: 'This picture of the desks of the Vice President and the Secretary of the Senate was taken on Monday, August 14, 1950, shortly before their removal from the Chamber, preparatory to the remodeling of the first floor, which will complete the repairs to the Chamber began in July, 1949, under plans approved and contracts made by the Special Committee on Reconstruction of the Senate Roof and Skylights and the Remodeling of the Senate Chamber. These desks were in continuous use during the daily sessions of the Senate since the senate moved from its former chamber (now known as the Old Supreme Court room) into the present Chamber on January 4, 1859, except for two brief periods - one in 1940, while the roof was being strengthened temporarily, and the other last year while permanent repairs were being made. New desks, more modern and more suitable, will be installed in the Chamber, the remodeling of which, it is expected, will be completed and ready for occupancy upon the opening day of the 82nd Congress.'
