Abstract

Although there is an abundance of information about recycling determinants and the effects of German reunification, this thesis combines these two areas to fill in a gap that has not previously been researched. This research aims to investigate factors that make a person more likely to recycle, particularly a German in the early 1990s, while especially targeting the difference between eastern and western Germans. This project involves background research, statistical analysis and interviews and reaches two conclusions. Firstly, recycling behavior is difficult to explain in Germany at this time because of the high rates of recycling in place. Secondly, recycling rates in East Germany quickly caught up to West German rates between 1992 and 1995 because the transitional period and lack of infrastructure was quickly resolved.
