Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to provide an adequate answer to the question of how domestic politics affect foreign policy, specifically examining Spain’s refusal to recognize Kosovo as an independent nation because of the Basque independence movement within its own borders. By examining the various aspects of domestic politics, including the election of officials, as well as the historical context of the political situation in both Spain and Kosovo, the question is answered. Foreign policy decisions are made based on the process of domestic politics. Spain refused to acknowledge Kosovo’s independence for fear that the Basques might separate in return.
