Abstract

Over the duration of our capstone course, we worked on several cases related to various accounting topics as well as our future career plans. We also had speakers from many firms come talk to the class for recruiting purposes. Their speeches varied from information about their specific firms to broad discussions about the future of accounting and how data analytics is going to revolutionize the industry. These discussions were some of the primary networking opportunities that we had prior to making our decision on which firm to intern with. Our case studies ranged from things such as researching the city with which we want to live in to a evaluating the accounting standards for certain assets and developing an opinion on how the FASB should modify their standards to properly account for the asset. From case 7 through case 11, we worked in groups on a major case study where we worked to develop audit, tax, and advisory solutions for GAP, Inc. before giving a presentation to the class and personnel from several firms on our conclusions. These case studies were our first introductions to the work done by audit, tax, and advisory departments at public accounting firms and allowed us to evaluate what service line we want to start our careers in. They also gave us valuable insight into the issues that public accountants must deal with and where we need to continue to develop professionally.
