Abstract

The objective of this project was to evaluate the soundscape throughout the Grove and the Circle (two popular outdoor spaces on the University of Mississippi campus) by determining the sound levels and people’s perceptions of sounds. The term soundscape is defined by a person’s perception of an acoustic environment in context. The human perceptions of sounds were gathered during soundwalks, which are walking tours of a given environment where participants provide opinions on their acoustic surroundings. Five soundwalk sessions were conducted with a total of 10 participants with varying environmental conditions. Statistically significant variations in perceptions and sound levels across the area of interest were identified, and the participants found some locations to be unpleasant. This study has provided meaningful information regarding the acoustic environment of the outdoor focal points of our campus, and has found important issues that should be addressed to ensure the unhindered enjoyment of these spaces.
