Abstract

The purpose of Protocol 23-005, Training for Animal Care Staff and Researchers, is to provide a training program for the researchers and Animal Care Staff (ACS) at the University of Mississippi. Through this program, participants can receive instruction on commonly used technical skills and procedures necessary to conduct animal research. Before commencing training sessions, I conducted a preliminary evaluation of the animal research facility and the role of the ACS at the University. My evaluation gave insight into the regular operations of the facility and staff, as well as what steps needed to be taken to begin training sessions. As an undergraduate student, establishing credibility for this project, where I would take on a major instructional role, was a daunting task. I relied on the expertise and assistance of Dr. Harry Fyke, DVM and our consultant team, as well as my own training as a veterinary assistant to create a professional training environment. Throughout the development of the project, I also considered the ethical benefit of animal research training based on the concept that training safeguards the ethical treatment of research animals and improves the quality of research results. I finally provide a detailed explanation of the procedures performed during training sessions at the University, including animal handling, anesthesia, substance administration, biological sample collection, and euthanasia.
