Abstract
This thesis consists of a series of case studies performed throughout the duration of the accountancy 420 class. Each case was connected to a key area of financial reporting, where we learned about a topic and then reflected individually and within groups. As we explored the intricate relationships between finance, economics, policies, and ethics, we were exposed to unsettling insights that led to eye-opening revelations. The China Hustle followed Dan David as his journey led to the discovery of inadequate regulation of the Chinese government in their financial world and the lies that we are fed about our own. This conveyed the importance of integrity while working in the financial industry and showed the actual detriment of unethical actions. A Reflection on the Military Industrial Complex shows history as it repeats itself. We consider President Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex and how it relates to the current U.S. military aid to Ukraine debacle. The case study on Dr. Ben Carson and Dr. Thomas Sowell introduced incredibly transformative ideology, as then men made such a significant impact simply using facts without emotions intervening. It sheds light on the importance of education and the ability of an individual to form their own opinions to drive change in our world. Lastly, the last case examined the ESG Agenda about the financial world and people’s eagerness to institute measures with high uncertainty and lack of definitive results. In addition to the case studies, we were tasked for our final project to introduce a business to Mississippi that would significantly contribute to its economic growth. Through thorough research and communication with experts, we acquired a deeper understanding of economic impact and business development. The case studies helped emphasize the importance and urgent need of the financial world to approach issues with integrity and facts to create a safer environment.
