Abstract

Stereotaxic surgery is a crucial tool for many researchers conducting neuroscience research. A critical step in a successful surgery is correctly identifying an anatomical landmark on the mouse’s skull known as bregma. This point, the (0,0,0) for the Franklin and Paxinos Atlas of the Mouse Brain, is the foundation for the 3D cartesian system used to standardize these procedures. Errors in its identification can have devastating consequences for research studies. Since proficiency in identifying bregma currently relies on time and experience, the cost for training novel surgeons can be high. I, under the guidance of Dr. Brenton Laing, have developed a potential solution in mitigating this cost in BregmaFinder Desktop Trainer. This training system allows novel surgeons to virtually practice identifying bregma, and allows them to track their progress in the form of data that indicates their error in anterior/posterior and medial/lateral directions. We are currently working on improving this trainer with the addition of a real-time bregma identification system to be used during surgeries, as well as a more user friendly desktop application to run the program through. BregmaFinder Desktop Trainer has the potential to vastly improve surgical outcomes by helping surgeons hone their craft.
