Abstract
This thesis explores the economic and social impacts of Grupo Social ONCE, a Spanish institution that operates at the intersection of business, philanthropy, and social inclusion. ONCE has evolved from a small lottery initiative for the blind into a multifaceted organization comprising JuegosONCE (its lottery operation), Fundación ONCE (a philanthropic foundation), and ILUNION (a business group promoting inclusive employment). Through historical analysis, organizational review, and employment statistics, this study evaluates whether ONCE successfully fosters economic inclusion for people with disabilities. It argues that the hybrid model of Grupo Social ONCE creates a self-reinforcing cycle of social and economic empowerment through lottery revenue, structured philanthropy, and strategic state partnership.
Despite concerns about parallel labor markets and limitations in job mobility, ONCE's contribution to employment and accessibility in Spain is substantial. The thesis concludes that while Grupo Social ONCE’s model may not be easily replicable outside Spain due to its unique political origins, it offers valuable insights into sustainable, inclusive development and the potential of philanthropic enterprise.
