Abstract
Science identity plays a vital role throughout graduate training as students begin to recognize themselves as scientists. Many disciplines have researched the science identities of doctoral students, yet they often do not reference each other or compare their findings. This lack of collaboration increases the possible reproduction of known findings. In order to address lacking consistency in communication, our research team conducted a scoping review utilizing preexisting science identity literature. We developed a keyword search string used in eight different databases, resulting in 617 unique studies. Furthermore, we created inclusion criteria to assess the relevancy and usefulness of each study for the review across two screening phases. The study had to be published after 2000 and include doctoral students in the natural sciences in order to be included in the review. We then analyzed each included study to identify common patterns and new findings. For each step of the scoping review, we documented these findings and came to a consensus as a team to ensure that the work is accurate and reproducible. Our results from this scoping review reveal the patterns of study findings, including the year of publication, country of publication, discipline of study, type of study, and disciplines of participants in these studies.
