Abstract

This thesis is comprised of five case studies that explore a range of contemporary issues in accounting, with a focus on auditing, financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and evolving role of accountants in a complex business environment. Dr. Victoria Dickinson assigned and advised the case studies throughout the Honors Accountancy 420 course. The case studies examine the analysis and interpretation of financial statements, emphasizing the identification of risk, the use of professional judgment, and the implementation of internal controls to ensure accuracy and transparency. Additionally, the case studies evaluate the growing impact of regulatory frameworks on businesses, highlighting both the intended benefits of increased oversight and the practical challenges associated with compliance.

Further discussion centers on emerging reporting requirements related to environmental and sustainability factors, as well as the broader implications these developments have for organizations, investors, and the economy. Theoretical perspectives on financial reporting are also considered, particularly in relation to asset valuation and the fundamental objectives of accounting information.

In addition to technical and regulatory topics, this thesis incorporates critical analysis of economic thought and its influence on accounting practices and decision-making. It also applies accounting concepts within a real-world business context, demonstrating how organizations adapt to industry changes, regulatory pressures, and shifting market conditions. Overall, this work highlights the dynamic nature of accounting, emphasizing the importance of analytical skills, ethical reasoning, and adaptability in addressing modern financial challenges.
