Abstract
This paper represents an accumulation of cases during a year of course work through the Professional Research and Development Thesis Program at the University of Mississippi under the supervision of Dr. Victoria Dickinson. The program includes a class that spans two semesters. The purpose of the class is to administer cases to the students that will allow them to research and discuss real-world examples and experiences within the accounting industry. The eight case studies that are included in this paper cover a wide range of political, legal and financial topics that businesses have recently dealt with. Through performance of these cases, students are able to understand how certain legislation, policies and customer beliefs can affect businesses as well as the way internal and external accountants and their jobs can be affected. The casework in this class also helps build a number of technical and interpersonal skills that will be relevant to the students’ career paths in the future. Reading real financial statements and other aspects of annual reports, working in teams to understand a topic and provide a deliverable, and learning how to effectively and efficiently research an accounting topic all scratch the surface of the necessary skills that accountants must have to succeed in their profession.
