Abstract

This thesis discusses and evaluates various contemporary accounting topics and issues through five different case studies in both a group and individual setting. These cases are intended to give students an opportunity to research a broad range of topics and get an in-depth view of different companies, economists, and current events relating to accounting and broader business topics. Through this process students are required to use their financial accounting knowledge gained from previous classes, critical thinking skills, and continue to develop their writing skills in both an educational and professional capacity. The content of this thesis is largely derived from the student’s own thoughts, but also includes research from various companies’ financial statements, governmental publications, and other relevant sources to the topics being discussed. Through this process I have increased my skills in understanding financial statements and using critical thinking to thoroughly evaluate a set of financial problems and effectively communicate my findings and possible solutions to these problems which will be invaluable to a future career within the accounting field.
