Abstract
This thesis comprises six independent yet interconnected case studies that reflect on a range of modern accounting and regulatory topics. These cases were written under the direction of Dr. Victoria Dickinson during two semesters of the Professional Research and Development Thesis Program at the University of Mississippi. The purpose of this class is to provide students with the opportunity to research cases that have real-world applications in the field of accounting.
The first case explores Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, emphasizing the increased importance of reporting for them and the growing role of accountants in sustainability assurance. The second case discusses the Corporate Transparency Act, focusing on its purpose of combating financial crime as well as its compliance burdens and unintended risks. The third case reflects on the philosophy of economist Thomas Sowell, discussing his perspectives on free markets and socioeconomic disparities. The fourth, fifth, and six cases are a multi-part analysis of the food company Conagra Brands, Inc and the impact that the Make America Healthy Again agenda has on this company. From this, an operational strategy is created with emphasis on audit procedures and the use of data analytics.
A central idea emerges across these six cases: the accounting profession does not merely have the role of traditional financial reporting but must adapt to regulatory, technological, and societal changes. Together, these case studies analyze the evolving demands placed on the accounting profession from increasing complexity in financial reporting and governance.
