Abstract
The structural elements of a office building designed for the University of Mississippi civil engineering senior design project were designed and analyzed. The proposed building is a shared office building located on an empty parcel on Oxford Commons Boulevard. Using the 2018 International Building Code (IBC), the structural loads were determined to be the following: 20 psf roof live load, 20 psf dead load, 20 psf snow load, and 15.6 psf rain load. These loads yielded a factored LRFD design load of 56 pdf. Using these loads and manuals provided by Nucor Vulcraft, the roof deck was determined to be a 22 Gage 1.5B-36 Steel Roof Deck and the joists were determined to be 24K7 steel joists for large spans, 16K7 steel joists for medium spans, and 10K1 steel joists for small spans. Similarly, the girders were designed using the AISC Steel Construction Manual to be W21x50 steel beams for large interior girders, W21x44 steel beams for small interior girders, and W14x22 for small edge girders. All columns were designed using the Steel Construction Manual to be HSS6x4x1/4 steel columns. Additionally, the lateral bracing was designed to use HSS3x3x1/4 steel sections. Finally, details were created in AutoCAD showing important structural connections.
