Abstract

This thesis was developed over the course of Honors Accounting 420, a two-semester sequence intended to deepen students’ understanding of financial accounting and related topics. The curriculum addresses a wide range of cases, including audit processes, company analysis, and the impact of new legislation on business operations.

Casework was completed collaboratively in groups, with team members rotating each week. This fostered exposure to diverse perspectives and approaches, resulting in comprehensive, well-crafted responses. Solutions were developed through group discussions, research into articles and 10-K filings, and the use of various other resources necessary to address each case’s requirements.

Through this class, I acquired valuable insight into accounting practices and procedures, including how to analyze 10-K reports and extract useful information. My research abilities improved significantly, enabling me to efficiently locate relevant data and develop ideas. Furthermore, the emphasis on group collaboration enhanced my teamwork skills, moving beyond simply splitting tasks to involving in meaningful discussion and shared problem-solving.

Besides technical knowledge, this course provided an environment in which adaptability and critical thinking were essential. Each new case yielded unique challenges, requiring us to quickly assess unfamiliar scenarios and develop reasoned solutions. The dynamic, discussion-based structure of the class encouraged open-mindedness and the civil evaluation of different viewpoints. These experiences have never just broadened my perspective on accounting but have additionally strengthened my confidence in dealing with complex, real-world problems. The mixture of academic rigor and pragmatic teamwork has made a lasting impression, preparing me for both the professional and interpersonal demands of a career in accounting.
