Description
The Senate Park Commission, established in 1901 by Senator James McMillan of Michigan, developed a plan that became the foundation for modern urban planning in Washington, D.C. It expanded upon the principles of Pierre L'Enfant's historic plan of 1791 for the Mall, and it established the foundations of the capital's design for the 20th century and its natural areas.
The L'Enfant plan decided on the location for the Capitol, and Dr. William Thornton became its first architect in 1793. His design included the dome center, inspired by the Pantheon.
