Abstract
This session will offer an overview of laws pertinent to libraries, along with corresponding policies that all types of libraries can implement to ensure compliance and protection for all parties involved. The legal areas will include the First Amendment, internet and social media, and privacy and confidentiality. The presenter will explain the relevance of specific laws and court cases to libraries using straightforward language and provide examples of policies to protect the rights of patrons and employees, as well as to limit libraries’ risk of facing potential legal action. The session aims to stimulate discussions and policy reviews within libraries to identify any gaps or areas needing improvement. Harley Rogers recently completed the American Library Association’s Law for Librarians Train the Trainer Workshop in early summer 2024, which prepared her to teach on this important subject. She is dedicated to providing ongoing resources and training to librarians at this conference and in the future.
