Maurice B. "M. B." Mayfield (1923-2005) was an African American artist best known for painting scenes of family and community in his hometown of Ecru. Known as a memory painter, he was influenced by the Regionalist painters of the 1930s and 1940s. Mayfield's paintings included scenes of Oxford, where he worked as a custodian for the art department at the University of Mississippi. Mayfield studied in secret as a protégé of Stuart Purser, who was the founder and first chair of the art department at the university.
