Description
Miles' description: At first we thought Johnson had been Barnett's back up and the story was given that Ross couldn't make it in time to refuse Meredith's admission to Ole Miss. A friend of mine who had a drug store in Calhoun City said that Barnett and his entourage had lingered several minutes drinking Cokes which easily lost time in getting to Oxford. The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court had warned that anyone who interfered with the court order would be held in contempt. Most of us felt that Johnson for political advantage culminating in his election as governor the next year was handed this prize. At first he probably realized me might be in deep trouble with the courts. But later in the afternoon he gladly went on TV to explain his 'courageous standing tall.'; Corresponding Negative, folder 8.
