Abstract
Course syllabus for Queer Mississippi, Fall 2022. Cross-listed as SOC596/HST596/GST596/SST596 (Sociology, History, Gender Studies, Southern Studies)
Course description: Current scholarship on LGBTQ+ lives emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, combining archival methods with oral histories, and employing a wide range of source materials. This cross-listed course, aimed at graduate students and upper-level undergraduates, focuses on Queer Mississippi lives, communities, and movements from a historical and sociological perspective. It trains students how to conduct and analyze interview and archival research, and gives students experience with creating a community engaged research exhibition on Queer Mississippi. The first part of the course introduces students to qualitative archival and interviewing research methods. The second part of the course asks students to practice collecting, analyzing, and exhibiting data for the Queer Mississippi archive at the University of Mississippi. Graduate students in the course will be tasked with leading class discussions and will take leadership roles (i.e., Primary Investigators) at various stages of data collection and analysis in specific project teams. Undergraduates will act as Co-Investigators at every stage of data collection and analysis on their project team. At the end of the semester, every student will participate in creating a portable exhibition of Queer Mississippi that can be displayed on campus or set up at events such as Oxford Pride.
