Abstract

Fall 2021 course syllabus for SOC 619 (Sociology): Religion, Gender, and Sexuality

Course description: Religion looms large in debates over gender and sexuality in U.S. society. It is difficult to discuss LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, feminism, or reproductive rights without also addressing religion. This course takes the intersections of religion, gender, and sexuality seriously and asks: How does religion help make gender and sexual norms feel moral and true? Is religion always oppressive to gender and sexual outlaws? How does religion structure LGBTQ+ lives and histories in conservative Christian contexts like Mississippi? This course also gives significant time and attention to qualitative research methods, oral histories, and public-facing scholarship. Through a class project, students will gain practical experience organizing and analyzing oral history interviews from the Queer Mississippi archive and will turn their analyses into a public exhibition.
