Abstract
OXFORD, Miss. - In 1950, New York Knicks head coach Joe Lapchick signed forward Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton as the NBA's first black player. Hailed as a landmark in professional sports, the deal profoundly affected the coach's family for decades to come.
