Abstract
Very early in Mississippi's history, our leaders made a commitment to educating the state's young people by creating the University of Mississippi. The Legislature issued our charter in 1844, and we opened our doors to 80 students in 1848. Since then, we have provided exceptional educational opportunities. During our 158 years, we have also mirrored the circumstances and challenges our state has confronted.
