Abstract

University of Mississippi officials have confirmed the following details concerning an on-campus incident earlier today: - A 19-year-old UM freshman, Marisha Porter of Columbus, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after an incident involving at least six students at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the Circle. - Three female students were treated for lacerations and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Campus police believe their injuries were inflicted with a box cutter. - Investigators said the incident stems from an ongoing personal dispute among the women. University police have questioned several of those involved, including a male student allegedly involved with two of the women. The investigation into the incident is continuing. "This is a reprehensible act and has no place on a college campus or in any civilized community," Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Larry Ridgeway said. "Ours is a safe and secure campus, and we will not tolerate this type of behavior. The student who has been arrested has been suspended from campus pending resolution of the campus judicial process."
