Abstract
University of Mississippi officials have learned that Wednesdays incident in the Circle was the result of a situation that had been brewing for several days. The investigation remains active and it is unclear whether additional criminal, civil or judicial charges will stem from the incident. - A 19-year-old UM freshman, Marisha Porter of Columbus, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after an incident involving several students shortly after 11 a.m. After being released from the Lafayette County Detention Center, Porter was suspended and barred from campus pending the outcome of her judicial hearing. - Three female students were treated for lacerations and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Campus police believe their injuries were inflicted with a utility knife allegedly wielded by Porter. - Investigators said the incident stems from a personal dispute among the women. All involved have been questioned, including a male student allegedly involved with two of the women. University Police Department officers were called to the scene at 11:12 a.m. and arrived within seconds to break it up. "UPD dispatch received a call at 11:12 a.m., and logs show the first officer arrived before the minute hand hit 11:13," UM spokesperson Ralph Braseth said. "Within seven minutes, UPD had five officers at the scene. We are grateful that their response was rapid and organized, preventing any additional injuries." "UPD officers and staff in the Dean of Students office have been counseling all the students involved in this incident," Braseth said. "They are making it known that any further incidents will result in strong and swift action on the part of the university."
