Abstract
UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- Metal detectors and security guards are becoming commonplace in educational systems as school crime continues to elicit nationwide attention. Growing concerns among parents about their children's safety have prompted numerous campaigns to stop the violence, but what can kids do to help save their lives? In his new book Staying Safe at School: What You Need to Know, Dr. Chester Quarles, professor of political science and director of the criminal justice program at The University of Mississippi, tells teens how theycan increase their safety at school and in the community.
