Abstract
UNIVERSITY, Miss. - Chris Lamont of Houston, Texas, an international studies graduate of the University of Mississippi, has received a J. William Fulbright grant for the 2002-03 academic year to study the resurgence of democracy in Croatia. Lamont graduated magna cum laude during UM's spring 2002 commencement. He was inducted to the university's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization. A member of the Croft Institute for International Studies, Lamont is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi, one of UM's highest academic honor societies, recognizing scholarship in all academic disciplines. He won the Russian Language Award in 2000. "Chris is an excellent student and researcher, and he exemplifies the type of student scholar the Croft Institute seeks to attract," said Michael F. Metcalf, Croft director. Lamont's interest in Croatia grew out of a semester studying abroad at the University of Zagreb, the oldest Croatian university and the oldest university in southeastern Europe. "To be able to study at Zagreb was exciting in itself, but to be a first-hand witness to Croatian democracy at work was a dream come true," said Lamont. "At Zagreb, I was able to focus on the origins and nature of contemporary Croatian nationalism and the popular appeal of the Croatian extreme right." He also has studied in the Republic of Serbia in Yugoslavia and plans to pursue a graduate degree in international relations or law. The Fulbright grant for graduate study and research abroad has been given to an estimated 85,000 students from the United States and 146,000 students from other countries over the past 55 years. The U.S. student program awards approximately 1,000 grants annually and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide. The principal purpose of the program is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries.
