Pa sitting in Parlor sends love to "Freddie" Providence Nov 2/72 My darling Boy Yours of Oct 27th lies before me for answering Pa has retuned from his "Sunflower trip." safe and sound as I [illegible word] to you on margin of paper after a ride of 100 miles on horseback 50 outdo in. Ma was much pleased with the country- Wasn't I brave to stay alone? Pa wrote you last week and doubtless you've recd the letter ere this. We were surprised last Wednesday by a visit from a long fellow- some 6 feet and as many inches, calling himself "[Len] Smith" came to see us and get license to marry Miss [McGhang] in the Macon hills- "Pa says the first evidence of worthlessness of character a man gives is when he marries without having the means to support a wife" smoke that in your pipe son We were quite interested in [Len] seems energetic and intelligent said he left "Fred" at Montacello that he would be in next day but he has not arrived yet- Brother Fred is running for Parish Judge but [Len] thinks a negro his opponent will be elected on the republican ticket. Had a visit from Miss Humphreys "Lilly" Lissie and Miss Knox a few days since full of gay thoughts & c. I regret my state of health is such I cannot pay particular attention to Miss H- They are coming in next Saturday to stay all night en route to Greenville where they are going to a fancy ball. I expect Miss Beaman was a school mate at Mrs [Stampe] of Lilly H- "To be polished" and doubt a very pleasant way- better go to school for and learn your book. study hard the math- the study of which was said to [illegible word] the features of the Greeks. "A first rate Presbyterians" that is all well enough but oh my Boy all [gesting] aside I hope you will drink deeply from the spiritual fountain yourself and have no misspent opportunities to repent of. Mr. [Sutton] died a few days since of pneumonia contracted from getting wet while waiting on the river bank for freight. I cant but think of his hard working life for property and of what avail? Lanier is now clerking for [Pennington]. Ive not seen him nor Frank C- I think the latter has moved to the country. Elections [illegible word] off tomorrow and no disturbance predicted which we truly hope may be realized. Mr. Leonard & Wife came down same boat with Pa had a pleasant confat with Mr. L did not see his wife. Your loving Ma Sarah G. Bernard
