Providence Parlor, Fire Side Rocking Chair Dec 8th/72 My darling darling boy Your truly welcome and best written letter, was duly received on the 6th, congratulate you upon your improvement the style, punctuation & c, [decidedly] the chief [illegible word] which this will certainly not be- I just returned from church De McClure the new minister preached his first sermon to us I hope sincerely, he may create an interest in this demoralized place, on the all important subject- You cant imagine how busy your [dear] little Ma has been- cleaning house, making over old carpets and entertaining friends and [illegible word] with [illegible word] The [Sceays] were at church looking sad enough. I spoke to them but no talk. There would have been many more out to day I expect but for the [illegible word], a general coughing among horses and mules ["Hunckadora"] among the number. I made a [illegible word] for him, trimmed it with scarlet put two stars on it which no doubt will add to his comfort if not pride We were aroused in the middle of last Saturday night by "knocking at the door." Pa jumped up asked who was there? answer Ms Decker she remained with us till Monday eve when she returned on "Pargoud". Mrs. Sparrow dined with her on Thursday and on Monday Judge & Mrs. Montgomery. Mattie [Knox] & Kate Morehead. Miss Anne (Mrs. D) wished a reconciliation with her father but failed- Why don't you give the name of the young lady from [Staunton]? And why don't you come out plainly and say you would rather not come home Christmas? You told me you could get home for half price now you say $50 never mind I am up to your tricks and manners. It is truly to me a disappointment but only for economy sake. He is very unstable was in rages when he came up poor boy it makes my heart ache to think how neglected or heedless he has been. He is half crazy about every pretty face he sees. Pa has not yet decided what to do on B-[illegible word] next year cotton is [depreciated] which may leave him in debt to G & J- He has the agency for De Burwells I had a long letter from Aunt Mary informing me of her approaching marriage to Joseph Bragan. It makes my heart [illegible word] but there are trials of every kind in this life and we must learn to bear- My dear dear brother- every heart may forget that lonely neglected grave, but your Sister never. Court is in session town pretty full of people trying [Eadine's] case now Court held in Schneiders old store. Pa will attend to your Frost Boots (hope they'll not melt) your letter asking for money was 11 days coming "about the [wrappers]" Will look for it when you see it you may depend upon it sometime if I am well enough for between my ill health and house duties as [Georgia] is both stubborn and slow I am constantly occupied. Old Mr. Graves died last week Miss Mollie Blackman goes to city to spend Christmas, [Lieut] Bing & Miss York married week before last I went on "Pacoud" to see Mrs Coleman went as far as Pugh's landing- Lizzie Blackburn not yet returned from Greenville Mr. D. came in time for her.
