Description

Cornell Franklin attended the University of Mississippi, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1913 and his Bachelor of Laws in 1914. Four Years later, he married Estelle Oldham (later to be Estelle Faulkner). After practicing law in Hawaii, Franklin served as an Assistant General and was appointed First Judge of the First Judicial Circuit of Hawaii until 1921. At the end of that year, he moved with Estelle to Shanghai, China where he practiced law for the United States Court of China. They had two children, Victoria and Malcolm. These pictures are taken from the Cornell Franklin Collection and depict a privileged life in Shanghai in the 1920s. Cornell Franklin and Estelle Oldham divorced in 1926. She married her childhood sweetheart, William Faulkner, a few months after returning to Oxford.
