Commerce in the Oxford Square with lots of people gathered on the balcony. Typed below photograph: Uptown Scene of Crowd in Oxford, attending The Day of the Public Hanging of Will Mathis (presumed to be one of the last public hangings practiced in the state of Mississippi). You'll Recognize the Site of the Building Here Which Was the Old Thompson House Then, But (the porch torn off and the old building reconstructed into the modern Colonial Hotel of Today.) ALSO, please note the Team of Mules hauling 'Willi's Coffin by wagon up from the jail (down one block). If you'll look close you will see men seated on the casket. [Other text follows].
