Abstract
Inspired by true events, Title Character: A Novel tells the intimate and fraught relationships of Asian female artists during a pandemic in Idaho: Jade, a rebellious girl born amid the one-child policy in Beijing, writes her love story into a script; Pearl, an ambitious actress raised in rural China, stars in Jade’s film and dates the method actor who plays her lover. Strung together by one film, young women of the Asian diaspora mirror and maneuver each other, while playing out their performances of self with art as their arena.
