Abstract
The purpose of this applied research was to prepare teachers with proper professional development so that teachers can be equipped with the skills and strategies to educate students who suffer from social-emotional trauma. Students are faced with many challenges outside of school. Sometimes these challenges come from the neighborhoods in which they live, their household and living conditions, the amount of violence that students have witnessed, and many more emotionally scarring situations. I have witnessed students miss out on the opportunity of student learning because of the emotional state they were in at that moment. Many times, students do not want to share out what is affecting them. In addition, teachers are not equipped with the necessary skills to address the issues that these students have. Therefore, this situation sometimes creates many missed learning opportunities and a low student achievement rate. I feel strongly that, if we get teachers the correct professional development that targets social-emotional learning, these leaders can create a better environment for our students and the entire school. In this study, I provided teachers with the resources through professional development that target students who suffer from social-emotional trauma. It is with hope that this targeted professional development has a positive effect on student achievement, student attendance, student discipline, and the entire school culture.
