Abstract
This applied action research with a program evaluation aimed to determine if the Improving Effectiveness Three (IE3) program which is composed of professional development on the Professional Growth System (PGS), engagement in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and participation in the New Teacher Academy (NTA) improves teacher effectiveness at North Panama High School (NPHS) as measured by the Mississippi Professional Growth System.
For the past five years, the United States has struggled to fully staff public schools with highly effective teachers. This struggle is increasingly difficult in several southern states. North Panama High School, surrounded by more affluent school districts, experiences the difficulty of staffing the school with highly effective teachers each year. The North Panama High School team concluded the shortages in teachers, and the desire of teachers to work in more affluent areas are beyond our control but the ability to invest in our teachers and the teachers who want to be at North Panama High School is well within our capacity.
We have experimented with best practices to improve teacher effectiveness for years but our team decided to develop an action plan which would improve teacher effectiveness by changing the mindset of the teacher from an individual growth plan to a collaborative plan centered on professional development in the PGS, engagement in PLCs, and participation in the NTA. The team decided to improve together and attained 88.89% of our teachers scoring a 3.00 or higher rating as measured by the Mississippi Professional Growth System. Our team also examined the relationship between teacher effectiveness and student achievement.
