Abstract

The purpose of this study was to improve high school teachers’ instructional practices through professional learning. This applied research study, using program evaluation, sought to improve science instruction in building their capacity through instructional practices. Faculty interest was created from reviewing various school and district data sources, observing the practices of science teachers, and having informal conversations with students about learning. Although professional development was provided in the past, there was a need for content-specific science professional learning to change teachers’ instructional practices. Through targeted professional development sessions, as well as observation and feedback, there was a goal of increasing teacher knowledge in the instructional process to improve student achievement in science.

This study used qualitative and quantitative data to triangulate and report the findings and outcomes of the program. Research on professional development and collaboration with teachers was coupled to create this action research study. Using teacher interviews, professional development surveys, and observational data, I was able to collect data to use in the study and report the findings from their participation. A plan-do-check-act cycle of continuous improvement was used with the methods. There were difficulties in obtaining student feedback on lessons and activities. Based on the results, secondary science teachers indicate they experienced some success with content-specific professional development and were able to implement strategies into their instruction. While success was found in many of the established goals, implications for gathering student feedback on science lessons and activities exist.
