Description

Faulkner used pictures to tell stories and words to make pictures. These startling paintings are articulated through his development of symbolic vocabularies. In paradox, Faulkner’s hyper-real constructions use words to go beyond words, portraying the practical through the surreal and abstract. Drawing on Faulkner’s drawings and fiction, this talk considers Faulkner’s brain. Using Cézanne and neuroaesthetics, I look at Faulkner’s defining and defying of print culture, a feat that inspired and provoked art’s “Abstract Expressionism.” In complex simplicity, Faulkner and de Kooning left arrows pointing to their desire to be read by us, their readers fated to read beyond the words.
